How to check if your water meter is working correctly

Most water meters have numbers representing how many gallons of water have passed through them since they were originally installed by the water department.

Step one: Record the current numbers that are on the water meter face.

If your meter is like the one in the picture above, the red indicator bar will spin around like a clock hand. Indicating 10 individual gallons with one complete revolution of the hand. Mark the current number.

Step two: Fill a five gallon bucket with water.

or [five one gallon jugs] =5 gallons

Step three: Read the current water meter numbers to confirm that you used exactly five gallons of water.

If yes: your water meter is working correctly

If no: Contact your water company to report a broken meter
